AFL trade period Finlayson headed to Port Betts added to Geelongs coaches

    Geelong are adding Eddie Betts to their coaching staff for 2022. Betts will join the Cats as a development coach after his extensive AFL career with Carlton and Adelaide finished.

    “Eddie has seen the game from every angle, starting on the rookie list and growing into one of the game’s best and most influential figures,” Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd said in a statement.

    “His knowledge, wisdom, leadership and experience will be a great asset for our team. Eddie is a great communicator, and he is excited to work with our players, Chris and our coaching staff, and everyone involved with the club. We are equally excited that he has chosen to join our club.”

    Betts said he was looking forward to the development of his post-playing career.

    “I am really excited by the opportunity to work with Geelong,” Betts said.

    “Geelong is a successful club with a magnificent culture that has always been consistently strong, and I cannot wait to get involved. I’m excited to support the club and I’m looking forward to being able to grow myself as well. Geelong is known for developing people and that is also an exciting element of joining the club.”

    Geelong’s list chief Stephen Wells has outlined the club’s interest in both Jonathon Ceglar and Tyson Stengle.

    But the status of Darcy Fort was central to any moves on the Hawks big man, Well said.

    “The reason we made some inquiries about Jonathon is because there was some interest in Darcy Fort from another club,” Wells said on SEN.

    “We have made some inquiries but that would all be dependent on whether Darcy Fort stays at the Cats and that’s still to be worked through.

    “It’s been public or reported that Brisbane have shown some interest in Darcy and that’s right. If I had to guess right now, I reckon that Darcy will still be at Geelong next year.”

    Wells confirmed the Cats were weighing up the pros and cons of former Richmond and Adelaide small forward Stengle.

    “We think Tyson’s had a terrific period with Woodville-West Torrens. He’s been a good player in the SANFL all year including a good performance in the premiership winning team.

    “We do have some interest in Tyson and he’s very lucky he’s got a man like Eddie [former AFL player Eddie Betts, who is set to join Geelong’s coaching panel] in his corner.

    “We haven’t committed to him yet, but it’s not just us that says we want Tyson. He’ll have to make that decision himself in conjunction with his management team. Tyson’s in a terrific position where he can have a bit of control over the decision that he makes and where he has his next opportunity at AFL level.

    “We’d be pleased if Tyson ended up with Geelong.”

    With Jeremy Finlayson set to join Port for a future third round pick, Hawthorn are expecting free agent Tim O’Brien to join the Western Bulldogs. O’Brien had also attracted interest from the Power.

    GWS Giants forward Jeremy Finlayson is poised to be traded to Port Adelaide as early as today, according to industry sources. Finlayson is keen to join Port for personal reasons. He is contracted to the Giants for next year.

    Hawthorn will not be pursuing Port Adelaide ruckman Peter Ladhams in this trade period. The 23-year-old has been exploring options with Sydney and the Hawks potentially interested however Port have said they expect a first round pick in return for the ruckman.

    Geelong have confirmed interest in ex-Richmond and Adelaide small forward Tyson Stengle. The goalsneak, who parted ways with the Crows ahead of this season after a string of off-field misdemeanours, has started for the SANFL’s Eagles to put himself in the frame for another shot at the big time. Geelong list chief Stephen Wells confirmed on SEN that the Cats were among the clubs looking at Stengle.
