  • Collingwood great Scott Pendlebury has signed a two-year contract extension to help usher in a “new era” but whether he remains as captain will be settled by a conversation with new coach Craig McRae over the pre-season.

Sydney football manager Charlie Gardiner hasn’t ruled out recruiting Peter Ladhams, but he intimated the Port Adelaide big man probably isn’t high on the Swans’ priority list at this stage.

“Peter Ladhams was one we inquired about last year, (but) we were able to secure Tom Hickey who had a fantastic year. Our circumstances have changed,” Gardiner told SEN.

“His management has reached out... I don’t think it’s progressed much further, but that’s something we’ll consider.”

All of that curious recent speculation about Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury potentially putting out feelers to join another club has been put to bed today with confirmation that he has agreed to a new two-year deal with the Magpies.

Pendlebury, who will be 34 in January, will extend his career into an 18th year, after he debuted for the club in 2006.

Already Collingwood’s all-time games record holder with 334, and their longest-serving captain (183 games), the former No.5 draft pick is now firmly on track to become the first Magpie to play 350 VFL/AFL matches.

“I’m glad to have come to an arrangement with the club to share in what feels like a new era,” Pendlebury said.

“Being a one-club player was one thing, something I am proud of, but my main motivation is to do all that I can to assist ‘Fly’ (new coach Craig McRae) and the new coaching group develop the squad.

“If you are not in contention, you have to be working towards it. That’s exciting.”

Pendlebury is undoubtedly one of Collingwood’s greatest ever players, having won the Norm Smith Medal in their drought-breaking 2010 premiership, featured in six All-Australian teams and won an AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.

He’s also won Collingwood’s best-and-fairest five times, and finished in the top three a further eight occasions.

Only Nathan Buckley (six times) has won the Copeland Trophy more times than Pendlebury.

Pendlebury is also the Magpies’ greatest ever Brownlow Medal vote-getter, with his 213 votes, including 38 best-on-grounds, placing him in the all-time top six.

In this Real Footy podcast trade special, Michael Gleeson and Daniel Cherny wrap the action from day one of trade period, in which Collingwood and Gold Coast completed a pick swap.

Here’s a refresher of this year’s 2021 AFL draft as it stands right now

North Melbourne offered a slide of draft picks in the late rounds next year in an ambit opening bid for Richmond’s ruck forward Callum Coleman-Jones.

On the first day of trade period, North made an initial offer of their third round pick next year for Coleman-Jones, but they want Richmond’s fourth round pick back as well as part of the deal for the player.

Fremantle and Geelong are at an impasse over a deal for speedster Jordan Clark.

Clark, the No. 15 draft pick in 2018, fell out of favour at the Cats after an impressive first season in 2019 and is keen to return to his native Western Australia and play for the Dockers.

Elsewhere, Carlton are set to land a third rival player over the trade/free agency period after fringe Western Bulldogs tall Lewis Young requested a trade to the Blues.

Hello everyone, and welcome to our live coverage of the second day of the 2021 AFL trade period.

It’s also the fifth day of the league’s overall exchange period, with free agency having begun last Friday.

So far, only three players have changed clubs, which means a whole host of footballers are still yet to arrive at their destinations of choice.

The most publicised name of that group is Fremantle midfielder Adam Cerra, who wants to play with Carlton next season.
