  • Here’s what the indicative order for the 2021 AFL draft looks like following the Kreuger deal.

    1. Jake Kelly (Adelaide) joined Essendon as an unrestricted free agent. Adelaide received pick 42 (AFL) as compensation.
    2. Mabior Chol (Richmond) joined Gold Coast as an unrestricted free agent. Richmond received pick 38 (AFL) as compensation.
    3. George Hewett (Sydney) joined Carlton as a restricted free agent. Sydney received pick 39 (AFL) as compensation.
    4. Collingwood traded a future second-round pick, a future third-round pick and a future fourth-round pick to Gold Coast in exchange for picks 22, 46, 58, 79 and a future fourth-round pick.
    5. Geelong traded Nathan Kreuger and pick 55 to Collingwood in exchange for pick 41.

Collingwood have traded pick 41 to Geelong for Nathan Kreuger and pick 55. It will be the first player deal of the trade period.

Kreuger, 22, is a tall forward from South Australia who played two AFL games for the Cats, both this year.

It’s actually the second time he’s been traded. In 2018 he joined the Cats in a trade with Carlton who had access to him as a state league player via their concessions from the AFL.

Sydney continue to press their hardline stance in relation to wingman Jordan Dawson, who is seeking a move to Adelaide.

The Swans maintain that Dawson is worth a top-five draft pick and are privately threatening to let Dawson walk for nothing to prove a point.

Publicly they are adamant they will need compelling compensation for the player who finished third in their best-and-fairest this year. Sydney would love for Port Adelaide to re-enter the conversation to land the South Australian but the Crows remain confident a deal will get done eventually which will make Dawson an Adelaide player.

The Crows have leverage given Dawson is out of contract and Adelaide have an early pick in the pre-season draft.

Collingwood great Scott Pendlebury has signed a two-year contract extension to help usher in a “new era” but whether he remains as captain will be settled by a conversation with new coach Craig McRae over the pre-season.

Sydney football manager Charlie Gardiner hasn’t ruled out recruiting Peter Ladhams, but he intimated the Port Adelaide big man probably isn’t high on the Swans’ priority list at this stage.

“Peter Ladhams was one we inquired about last year, (but) we were able to secure Tom Hickey who had a fantastic year. Our circumstances have changed,” Gardiner told SEN.

“His management has reached out... I don’t think it’s progressed much further, but that’s something we’ll consider.”

All of that curious recent speculation about Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury potentially putting out feelers to join another club has been put to bed today with confirmation that he has agreed to a new two-year deal with the Magpies.

Pendlebury, who will be 34 in January, will extend his career into an 18th year, after he debuted for the club in 2006.

Already Collingwood’s all-time games record holder with 334, and their longest-serving captain (183 games), the former No.5 draft pick is now firmly on track to become the first Magpie to play 350 VFL/AFL matches.

“I’m glad to have come to an arrangement with the club to share in what feels like a new era,” Pendlebury said.

“Being a one-club player was one thing, something I am proud of, but my main motivation is to do all that I can to assist ‘Fly’ (new coach Craig McRae) and the new coaching group develop the squad.

“If you are not in contention, you have to be working towards it. That’s exciting.”

Pendlebury is undoubtedly one of Collingwood’s greatest ever players, having won the Norm Smith Medal in their drought-breaking 2010 premiership, featured in six All-Australian teams and won an AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.

He’s also won Collingwood’s best-and-fairest five times, and finished in the top three a further eight occasions.

Only Nathan Buckley (six times) has won the Copeland Trophy more times than Pendlebury.

Pendlebury is also the Magpies’ greatest ever Brownlow Medal vote-getter, with his 213 votes, including 38 best-on-grounds, placing him in the all-time top six.
