  • Sydney have rekindled their interest in Port Adelaide ruck/forward Peter Ladhams.

That interest remains preliminary at the moment but is genuine if the right deal could be found and comes after the Swans attempted to lure the contracted Ladhams to Sydney last season.

Port are keen for him to explore his options despite him having one year remaining on his deal.

North Melbourne has offered a slide of draft picks in the late rounds next year in an ambit opening bid for Richmond’s ruck forward Callum Coleman-Jones.

North has offered their third round pick next year for Coleman-Jones but want Richmond’s fourth round pick back in return in the deal for the player.

The Tigers and North are a long way apart in early discussions as Richmond wants the Roos’ pick 20 for the big man who has been offered a four-year deal to move to Arden Street.

Coleman-Jones was drafted with pick 20 four years ago.

Richmond was frustrated and disappointed at the player’s decision to leave in the first instance believing opportunities would begin to open up in the Tigers senior team next season and beyond.

They also feel the player had been well supported by the club after his COVID breach at a Gold Coast strip joint and fight outside a kebab bar along with teammate Sydney Stack cost the club $100,000 in the salary cap and saw the players suspended at length.

North holds the first pick in the pre-season draft but it is unlikely the player or his management is keen to use this avenue to move.

North reasons the 22-year-old player has only played nine games since being drafted in 2017.

Coleman-Jones has spent most of his time as a back-up forward to premiership stars Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt.

The 200cm athletic tall played most of his junior football in the ruck and wants to play more as a ruckman than a forward.

Richmond has already lost versatile tall Mabior Chol this off-season with the ruck forward moving to the Gold Coast Suns as a free agent.

The Suns were in close negotiations with Coleman-Jones prior to securing Chol as a free agent.

North Melbourne ironman Ben Cunnington broke down in tears when describing the support he had received and his determination to return to the field after being diagnosed with a testicular tumour.

Cunnington, 30, finished runner-up in the Kangaroos’ Syd Barker Medal count to youngster Jy Simpkin - the sixth time the robust midfielder had enjoyed a top-two finish - and his emotional speech touched all those who tuned in to the event.

The 227-game veteran missed the final four matches of the season, having had successful surgery, and agreed his finish in the best-and-fairest count had been special.

I’m sure few fans bar the most attentive had much interest in Nick Hind’s move from St Kilda to Essendon in last year’s trade period.

But once the season was up and running and Hind was bursting through the middle for the Bombers, suddenly that move received lots of attention.

Last year the Saints send Hind and the then pick 77 for picks 67 and 74.

Hind went on to play 22 games for the Bombers as they returned to the finals.

I reckon supporters will be paying more attention to any such trades made this year.

Hard to know if any such players are in the running to make a move just yet, those moves seem to wait until right at the end of the period.

But with VFL and NAB League players getting so few games in recent years, perhaps more sides will try players who have been training at AFL level yet not getting games.

Australian NBA swingman and Olympic bronze medallist Josh Green is locked into his NBA career for the foreseeable future but the former GWS Giants academy player has showed off his kicking skills at the State Fair of Texas this evening.

The Dallas Mavericks player posted a story to his Instagram account showing him drop punting gridiron balls at some targets.

Check the video out below, he also tagged in the Giants just to remind them he hasn’t forgotten how to kick a footy.

The Gold Coast Collingwood pick swap also involves an exchange of future fourth round picks in the flick around of a cluster of picks between the clubs.

Collingwood will give up its fourth round pick as well as its future second and third round picks in order to get Gold Coast’s second and two third round picks this year as well as the Suns’ fourth round pick next year.

The net effect of this is Collingwood gives up a second and a third round pick next year to get a second round and two third rounds this year while the two clubs flip around fourth round picks next year.

Sources indicated the deal was likely to occur in the trade period - and thus help grease the wheels of other trade deals the Magpies are trying to do to secure Pat Lipinski from the Dogs and Nathan Krueger from Geelong - rather than agree in principal and do the deal on draft night after the bid for Nick Daicos comes in.

With the impact of changes to list sizes and the tight salary cap and deferred contract payments still being felt clubs are anticipating as few 50 players might be taken in the draft this year.

That means points for picks late in the draft.

Two trades which appear likely to drag on are the moves of Jordan Dawson from Sydney to Adelaide and Jordan Clark from Geelong to Fremantle.

The Swans are of the view that Dawson is worth an early first-round pick but the Crows are keen to hang onto pick four.

Geelong want more than Freo’s pick 27 for West Aussie Clark, and have leverage given he’s contracted for 2022.

Horsham native turned Fremantle midfielder Darcy Tucker is reportedly re-signing with the Dockers and holding off on a move back to Victoria.

The Dockers picked Tucker in 2015 and he has emerged as a reliable senior player completing 94 games including 16 this past season.

The West Australian is reporting the Dockers will announce Tucker’s new deal in the coming days.

There is a bit of talk around about whether the Hawks could deal some of their veterans like Tom Mitchell, Jack Gunston or others to make room for younger players while ruckman Jon Ceglar’s name has been talked about as being on the move.

Here is new coach Sam Mitchell talking to The Age’s Michael Gleeson this past weekend about what he thinks the Hawks need ahead of 2022.

    What do Hawthorn need?

Heading into the period of the year that shapes the season’s fortunes as much as anything Mitchell defers to the list managers but accepts he is comfortable with the back line and while he would favour bringing in the best talent he recognises the midfield and forward line are bigger priorities.

“We have started the last 12 months -CJ [Changkuoth Jiath] has had significant up-lift in performance, Denver [Grainger-Barras] has come in, Will Day has come in and started to have an influence, Lachie Bramble, second half of his year, [Jack] Scrimshaw, second part of his year, were quite strong. Blake Hardwick has been solid.

“Then in the front end you have the hopeful emergence of Mitch Lewis and certainly this year it was Jacob Koschitzke who came from nowhere and had a strong season, so there is some upside in what we have been able to do with our youth over the last 12 months. We are not there yet.”

Two-time Trevor Barker Medallist Seb Ross has re-signed with the Saints for two more seasons.

The Saints confirmed the deal after reports emerged this morning that the 160-game, 28-year-old would remain with the club.

Saints head of list management James Gallagher said the club wanted Ross to help lead their side.

“We’re really pleased to have Seb recommit to the club,” Gallagher said.

“A lot of Seb’s work goes unnoticed externally, but inside the four walls we recognise just how important he is to our side on a number of fronts.

“Seb is an honest and genuine guy, who has been a very good player for a number of years. More recently his versatility and willingness to play multiple roles for the team has become a really important aspect of his football.

“He’s played a prominent role in developing the likes of Ryan Byrnes and Jack Bytel during the past few seasons, and we have full faith he’ll continue to do that for many other young Saints.

“We look forward to seeing what Seb can produce in the coming seasons.”
